So 1.0 characters can be played on 2.0; so, I should get the 2.0 software.

I'm confused about what other characters or game pieces I should consider buying outside of the (Marvel) starter pack. It appears that there are play sets meant to be played together: Avengers, Spiderman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other Disney classic characters (are the classic characters 1.0?). If I get characters from different play sets, can they be played together? Same question for other game pieces for which I do not know what they are or do (power discs, etc)?
