I watch a lot of high-level HS aged volleyball
The best volleyball for HS aged kids, at least in the midwest, is not high school volleyball. It's club volleyball. For girls, the talent is a lot more spread out. There are about 80 club teams at each age level in the USA volleyball Gateway Region (eastern MO, southern IL, plus parts of Arkansas & Iowa). For guys, there's only a handful of teams, no more than ten teams in the entire region for each age level. As a result, guys teams tend to have more concentrated talent than the girls teams do. Girls club teams, with the exception of the handful of teams that make nationals, usually have 1 or 2 outstanding players who will go on to play college VB, while the guys teams will have 3-6 college bound players.

Having watched a ton of 17 and 18 year old guys club teams, they don't come close to BYU's women's team. They have the height and athleticism to match the older girls, but they are still developmentally a LONG ways from what you see at the college level. Sets aren't always crisp, there are a lot of overpasses. The timing on the hitting isn't exactly on to avoid the blocks.

It may be different in CA where there's more guy's volleyball played at the HS age levels, but here in the St. Louis area, the BYU women's team easily walks over the better guys 17 and 18 club teams. The club teams would destroy the high school teams.
