I don't envy volleyball refs. The sport happens way too fast for me to judge.
Take setting, for example. A double hit is a no-no, right? Well, we're humans and we're not perfect. I guarantee you that it is almost never that both hands contact the ball at the exact same time. So the question becomes not whether there was actually double contact on a set, as there pretty much always is. The question becomes to what degree.

Then there's the lift call. In truth, it's become just a matter of degree on this call. When it become beyond obvious, it's called. Otherwise, it generally happens to some degree on most sets.


Point being, they're asked to make judgement calls of degree all game long. If it's not obvious, I think you let it go. It certainly wasn't obvious to the eye if the ball was touched or not. What we don't have with all the video replays is the sound. Maybe the ref heard contact.
