Alohi is a more dynamic setter and it has lifted the team. BYU would have never made the sweet 16, but for this change. To make the sweet 16, BYU had to beat Arizona in Tuscon (yes a home match for AZ). In addition to changing setters, Olmstead also sat Senior starter at Outside Hitter, Tambre Nobles for Cosy Bennett for the better part of a set. Nobles is steady, but all season long has struggled to record kills. She gets dug a lot. After sitting for a bit, Nobles came back in, stopped trying so many tips and roll shots, and just powered the ball past the block harder than she had all season. This was the second necessary coaching adjustment. Those two things helped BYU beat Arizona and make the sweet 16. Then for the next couple of games, Olmstead rotated Camry Godfrey-Willardson at Setter with Alohi Robins-Hardy and also would give a little time to Cosy Bennett in relief of Tambre Nobles. In the 4th set against Florida St., Camry started the set as the setter, but BYU quickly fell behind by 4. Alohi came in and BYU climbed back out of the hole, won the set and match and Camry hasn't seen the court since.
Olmstead made some bold coaching adjustments and the payoff has been a berth in the championship game. Changing out a 2 year starter at setter (who is only a jr.) during the NCAA tourney is like subbing out your starting QB in a big game. Real stunner. But it worked. Olmstead deserves coach of the year.
