Most of BYUs injuries happened at the same time and they didn't just lose good players they lost their best players. Imagine losing booker and orchard. Utah wouldn't have been the same. byu would not have lost to UCF or Nevada with Hill and possibly not to usu (tight game he went down). BYU had most of their best defensive players out or playing at 75% during their big losing streak. Still not world beaters on defense but it would have made a difference.
