Which is why I said it was speculation.
And also just because something is reported many times by "reputable" news sources doesn't make it right. The NFL could have released those statements based on the words of the refs who "tested" the balls before the game. Of course we tested them. (unless they didn't)

When in fact in the course of all the interviews with the Patriots staff it could have come out that there are multiple witnesses that say the refs never tested them with a gauge and now the NFL is in damage control mode.

The pressers by Belichick and Brady actually make me more convinced they had nothing to do with this. There's not a chance they would come out THAT forceful if there was any chance there's a smoking gun. The ramifications are too great.

Remember when spygate happened, BB fessed up to it right away. There were no denials at all.

Just offering my opinion on why this is taking a LOT longer than the NFL wants.
