football it's because a lot of our older fans grew up during the glory days and witnessed a national championship so they continue holding the program to the standard. Unfortunately times have changed and I would argue the CFP actually makes it harder for BYU to ever win another national championship. Basketball has never had that level of success but but even the recent sweet 16 appearance creates an expectation for it to happen every year which is not realistic either. The constant comparisons with Utah don't help, especially when things are going well for them.
