Took post seriously until "WCC is a bad conference." compared to MWC, that
assertion is not credible if you are talking basketball programs both in terms of present quality or in terms of richness of basketball history. Only UNLV history compares to most WCC basketball programs.

That people who don't hail from the West Coast don't get that, doesn't change history. That the Eastern press doesn't give the conference its due, doesn't change that. It shows up more accurately in Pomeroy's data.

The dominant factor for this BYU fan condescension towards WCC schools has to do with the fact that these institutions are mostly small liberal arts undergrad colleges rather than great research universities which is how many Cougars would like to see their University. This basis for contempt is almost entirely below the conscious surface which is why the WCC haters move from one goofy rational to another as the facts refute their prevailing justification.

But the leadership at the great research universities hate what BYU stands for. Their Presidents and Boards have contempt for what they view as excessive sectarianism and lack of academic freedom. My view is that BYU's great strength is it's terrific undergrad programs (plus business, law grad, preparing for the workplace)). That is where BYU fits in best.

Over time, probably decades, BYU might either gradually reduce its terminal graduate programs in liberal arts or separate its relationship with Church governance. There exists a fundamental instability due to BYU's top down organizational structure and its PHD grad research programs in liberal arts. With its current structure, BYU is great at preparing people for the workplace and for a life of faith in the Church.

In the meantime, BYU fits in beautifully with the WCC. WCC loves BYU, wants BYU, and the BYU Board of Trustees will likely continue to resist compromises to affiliate with institutions in the P5 which have contempt for BYU values regardless of what sports enthusiasts prefer.

BTW, BYUtv has exploded globally the last few years in large part because BYU left the MWC. BYUtv supports the larger purpose.

Peace.
