I have to say that I am shocked how few people understand the ending. It's very clear, and not at all a matter for interpretation. The build-up to it was convoluted, but the last couple of episodes made it obvious.

The ending was actually better than fine; it was really good. It was focused on the people and the main theme of the show - that we are all lost and need each other to progress. It was the other stuff in the show that was the problem.
