True, but I think this says more about the number of those 40 and younger
Being a spending age and not a savings or investing age. $35k net worth average by age 40 means there are way too many people this age with nothing or even negative net worth. Crazy in a nation like ours where you don't have to be wealthy to have a retirement plan or net worth, that so many are unprepared for retirement.
