It could have been done, in the right hands.
Angelina just picked scenes from the book, then spent way too long on the individual scenes. I bet Spielberg could have given it the Schindler's List/Saving Private Ryan treatment, captured the backstory & provided a nice epilogue in 2.5 hours.
