In essence, Lincoln said that if the high wire specialist of his day, Blondin, were to cross Niagra Falls on a high wire carrying the treasure of the nation, should the spectators yell at Blondin to lean a little more to the left or step a little higher or go a little faster, or perhaps a little slower. No, the spectators should hold their breath and pray that Blondin brings the treasure safely to the other side. So it was that in his day the people needed to give Lincoln their support in prosecuting the Civil War rather than their complaints.
It is a sad state of affairs when BYU fans complain more about BYU coaches than Utah fans. I always thought you could tell who was a fan of a team by how much they supported it, not by how much they complained about it.
