I was a senior in high school. My sister lives in Phoenix and a couple of my buddies and I made the trip down to see her and experience the Phoenix Open. Tiger was brand new on tour. this was a couple of months before his first Masters win. We followed Tiger pretty much the whole tournament even though he was never in contention that week.
Many of you probably know the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale is the party hole. People go there to party and drink first and watch golf a distant second. There were probably 15K people surrounding the hole. My friends and I had a place behind the green maybe a couple of people deep.
The crowd was already amped up and rowdy when Omar Uresti, Tiger's playing partner, got up and knocked it to about 3 feet. The crowd went crazy and started chanting O-mar, O-mar, O-mar.
Tiger got up next. It went deathly silent as he prepared to hit his ball. The second he made contact the crowd erupted. The ball hung in the air for what seemed like forever, landed just short of the cup, took two or three hops, and then jumped in the cup. If the crowd was loud before that, it was then an explosion of mayhem. Everyone went crazy. Within seconds beer cups started being thrown from the crowd onto the fairway "like a ticker-tape parade" the announcer on TV would say. Tiger "raised the roof" as he walked off the tee box toward the green. The crowd roared for the whole minute or so it took them to walk up the green and continued the roar for a long time after he took his ball out of the cup. One dude even ran out from the gallery onto the fairway bowing down as if to worship Tiger before being ushered back by security.
It was one of those iconic sports moments you'll always remember. It was fun to be there live and in person.
