Only two conferences (ACC and SEC) require its members to play at least one
P5 team in their non-conference schedule. These two leagues want to increase the perception of their non-conference schedules. Before today, the ACC and SEC have said BYU won't count as a P5 opponent for meeting that requirement. So it's about perception, and they didn't think BYU met the higher bar.
