P5 recognition vs conference inclusion
One thing everyone isn't thinking about is the genius in simply recognizing BYU as a P5 school. By doing so, BYU gets "street cred" so to speak among the P5, but none of the 'kwon'. It makes it more advantageous for a ACC school to dump a McNeese State, or even a Troy and play BYU to fill the schedule slot and not take a ding for playing an FCS or G5 school when it comes to the NC playoff selection.

For BYU, it opens the door for NY6, but also forces BYU to play more P5 opponents EVERY week in order to justify inclusion in the NY6 or NC. I can see where the other P5 conference see this is the best way to limit BYU from EVER playing for the NC, because by all of them recognizing BYU, and opening the door for up to 60 schools to schedule games, BYU would have no excuse to play any AAC teams, or MWC teams ever. And if they did, they would have to basically hope and pray that team is the conference champion that year, impossible to predict.

So, in with P5, but gone would be USU, Boise State (unless the Big 12 took them), and Middle Tennessee, Conneticutt, Cent FL, BYU would have to hope that they schedule the cellar dweller in the P5 conferences to maintain their lighter part of the schedule.

And filling and winning out a schedule of only P5 opponents is likely the ONLY way BYU goes to the NC under a 4 team playoff. An 12-0 BYU this year doesn't beat out any of the 4 teams that played in the NC games, and probably even misses the other NY6 games. Well, maybe we make it since Boise would have lost one more game.
