SMC is an NIT team this year, and they have 1 year to go.
It has an impact. But it's not going to undo the program. I think we agree on that.
As far as their best days being behind them, who really knows. It all depends on how well Bennett recruits and develops talent. He's taken a program that had 3 NCAA appearances in history, and turned it completely around.
SMC was one of the worst historical WCC programs before Bennett. This will make 8 seasons in a row that SMC has played in either the NCAA or NIT. He's taken SMC to 5 NCAA appearances during his tenure, and produced a couple of guys that are currently playing in the NBA. He's done well enough that SMC is pouring $13 Million into arena and training facility upgrades this off-season.
I'm just saying the above for perspective. I don't like Bennett, or SMC. They're my least favorite WCC program. But I have to give credit for a turnaround job.
Whether their best days are behind them, or they are in the infancy of building an even stronger program than they have now...time will tell.
