took a much greater percentage of the slots. Prior to 1975 you couldn't get into the NCAA unless you won the conference championship. In the 1980's most of the slots were taken by auto-bids. If you were not a conference champion, you would have needed to get a 5 or 6 seed in today's tournament. During Ainge's run, the ACC and Big 10 each had 4 teams PAC 10 and SEC had 3, etc.
