Respect for Haws and Reveno - Belated post on the Portland game
I’ve attended every game at Portland since BYU joined the WCC, and this year’s game was easily the best of the bunch for me. The BYU contingent was not the largest I’ve seen, but easily the most engaged. The Chiles Center can seat 4,852, the attendance was 3,433, and easily half were BYU fans. More importantly, the BYU faithful were loud, and definitely a factor. I always feel bad for the Portland fans and their cheerleaders, but particularly this year. It was a little amusing to see the bewildered looks on some Portland fans faces when the BYU fans went crazy after Tyler broke the record – sustained cheering through the next Portland possession. It was terrific.

I was lucky enough to sit behind Tyler’s parents, who are just terrific people. Justifiably proud of their son, but restrained in how they demonstrate it, unlike some parents who draw attention to themselves. I chatted with them after the game, and it’s obvious that Tyler’s character and demeanor is a reflection of his parents. If you haven’t watched this video, it’s worth a look:

(Note at the 1:45 mark, that he was doing the “okey doke” back in high school.)

Final note – I’ve been a fan of Eric Reveno for a while. By contrast to some WCC coaches (*cough* Bennett and Walters *cough*) he wins and loses with class. It was great to see him take the time, after a disappointing loss, to get the game ball and give it to Marty Haws. Much respect.
