Look, it would be great if BYU had a 'proven QB' as a backup for the coming season, but that's a pretty rare thing for most programs. BYU is simply NOT going to talk a high quality QB into coming to BYU to be a backup. It won't happen.,
Think about this for just a minute, ok? They aren't counting on Mangum as the primary QB. He might be the backup. It's not unusual at all to have an unproven QB as the backup. That's the nature of the position.
If Hall had been eligible in 2006, he would have been the backup. Our backup to Hall in 2007 and 2008 was Brendan Gaskins. Our backup to Hall in 2009 was RM Riley Nelson. Should we have had better choices to back up Hall, a QB who was notorious for taking hellacious hits in the pocket? Sure. But high quality QBs don't....want....to....sit....the....bench.
The way you run a program is to have your main guy backed up by an underclassman of high quality. Even though he's rusty, Mangum will be better than any JC BYU could talk into sitting the bench and even though he's a freshman, the same is true of Hoge.
