We used to live in metro Detroit and we drove over the Lake Huron/Blue Water Bridge into Ontario and cut over to Niagara Falls that way. You can also cross into Canada from Detroit through Windsor, but you might hit more traffic. You can easily do Niagara Falls and the church history sites in 2-3 days.
