This is quite common in Asia. Spending your entire career at one company is very common in Japan and Korea especially, so they look at it as an investment in their future. IIRC, my Korean classmate (worked for Korea Telecom) was on the hook for 7-8 years. In all fairness, they not only paid for his educational expenses, but they also paid his salary and travel expenses during that time.
