He was hurt and gave up football. His BIL talked him into trying out again
That right there is an opportunity he got that nobody else did because of his familial connections. It is not that far of a reach to assume Nick Howell gave him more chances when he got on the team. He absolutely sucked his first year. Can you prove there wasn't any nepotism? That would be harder than proving there was.
