do you see the splash screen when it boots up and then the screen goes blank?
Can you boot into safe mode and see the screen on the laptop? If you see the desktop in safe mode, its an issue with the display driver.
Also there are usually hit keys on the laptop that will turn off the laptop screen. Usually looks like a small computer screen on one of the fn keys.
