trying to survive in an apocalyptic situation. The characters grow/devolve and change significantly episode to episode and the plot continues to be about them trying to survive various situations that arise. It's a television show with no intended ending any time soon so they can't really do a typical plot arc that involves rising tension, climax, resolution, etc.
It's not a sitcom or police procedural in which each episode stands alone, it's a soap opera format. There's nothing wrong with disliking that format (I typically don't like it), but there's also no point in complaining that show isn't something it's not. That's basically like complaining that Seinfeld doesn't have enough serious drama.
