The church history sites (both LDS and the break off sects) can fill an afternoon, but it is good to do in conjunction with another activity because they are not as extensive as Kirtland, Palmyra, or Nauvoo. Independence also has a lot of historical sites relating to the Oregon and California trails and Harry Truman. Liberty Jail is not that far away, but it is north about 30 minutes. Far West and Adam Ondi Ahman are a bit of a drive north.

KC has some excellent barbecue establishments.
