I do think his staff hirings have missed the mark on a good balance.
BYU by nature tends to create a rather incestuous atmosphere in terms of hiring and you certainly do want a staff that bleeds Blue and is 100% behind the mission of the university. That being said, I would like to see more of Bronco kicking the little birds out of the next to go out into the world and build depth and breadth of experience.

A nice cross section of BYU royalty, Poly connections, and coaches from outside the BYU bubble would be better for the institution. I know Bronco values loyalty, but there is something to be said for hunger as well. There is something to be said for a coach who will come in for 3-4 years, bust his butt, and then try to move on to a coordinator position.

Or...a coach like Holliday who was a slam dunk. I think Anae is a great coach...and he got to learn from some true innovators. I think Holliday is a great coach, and he has paid his dues around the country. I'd like to see a little more of that.

We need at least one more Holliday, and while I defend Howell in terms of his capacity to coach, an African American DB coach who can buy into the principles the way Holliday does would be a very good addition to the staff.

I also think it would be good for Howell. Obviously Bronco saw potential in the guy and unlike many, I don't think Bronco wants to cut off his nose to spite his face just because he likes a guy. I think he honestly sees potential. But Bronco is really the only mentor Howell has ever had. So what does he do, he tries to be Bronco. He can't. He isn't Bronco.

Howell needs to go out into the world and get exposed to different styles of leadership, different schemes...if he ever wants to reach his potential he's not going to do it by homesteading at BYU. That goes for our other home grown coaches as well who have been tethered to Y mountain.

Enter to learn, go forth to serve. It's time the coaching staff, and Bronco as the leader of that staff, take that to heart. Bronco is a great defensive coach...but he's not the only one. Anae has managed to institute what is effectively 3 different offenses at BYU, all of which have had success, because he's been mentored by innovators.

Staff hiring is absolutely a fair critique...and I think it's because he errs too much on the side of stability and loyalty and doesn't give enough credence to freshness and hunger to improve.

I'd like to see Howell prove everyone wrong. He's not going to do it if is only resume block is BYU.
