I use that example because I think to those that make the decisions, it is a little more of a brand type thing.
Personally, the fact that you can't wear shorts or women can't wear capris at BYUI seems a lot weirder than the beard ban at both campuses. That actually embarrasses me a bit when I have been asked about it...because I can't explain it.
Clean cut and clean shaven may seem as silly as modesty these days (not saying they are the same) but most people can understand that as nothing more than an extended dress code so people don't look like slobs, on their way to growing their manly beards.
