Going into the weekend last week, BYU was the #2 rated MCLA team in the US. They played two top ranked teams (conference games too) and lost both games by 1 point each. Today, they lost to Westminster by 1 point also.
With today's loss, that guarantees that BYU can not finish higher than 4th in their conference. Their next game is against Utah, and they should easily win that game; however, it's a rivalry game, so who knows what will really happen. This will be an important game, because they need to finish in the top 4 to be able to qualify for the 4-team conference tournament.
It's interesting to note, that if BYU does wrap up 4th place in the conference, they will be in a tournament with three other teams--all of whom they have lossed to--and in each game by 1 point. Meaning, that the conference championship is up for grabs. There are 6 at-large teams invited to the MCLA national tournament (which BYU has won four times). I think in order to get into the tournament, they either must win their conference championship (automatic berth) or win at least the first game of the tournament. That will still not be a lock, but possibly could be enough to get them in.
Personally, I think they were somewhat overrated at #2, but they are a good team, but there are other teams out there as good and even better.
Go Cougs.
