Obviously, my overall point is not to knock USU, it's to point out that a single
bowl game isn't going to permanently change either program. Hawaii didn't all of the sudden become a superpower with their BCS bowl, and neither would USU. If USU becomes a football power it won't be because of a NY6 bowl invitation. Rather, it would be because they built that program up to become great. BYU will similarly be great, or not, based on how things play out in the long run, and none of it is based on whether USU ends up in a NY6 game. BYU could make a lot of noise nationally and become a serious player without ever reaching a NY6 game due to the nature of those games and BYU's access to them. BYU could be a perennial top 15 team, and never reach a NY6 game. On the other hand, USU could be a top 20 team once and make it to a NY6 game due to the G5 auto-bid. Clearly, a hypothetical program that constantly reaches top 15 status is a better, more respected program than another hypothetical program that is rarely ranked at all, even if there is a NY6 bowl invitation in there somewhere.

With regard to USU, they clearly have done some very impressive things over the last several years. That program has clearly taken a big step forward, and they are to be congratulated. They aren't BYU, though, and it will be very, very tough for them to ever reach BYU's level year-in and year-out. They may occasionally put out teams that are better than what BYU fields, but that won't be the usual state of affairs.
