They received so many shares of start up companies it was mind boggling. He wasn't even a partner and he received distributions (equity) from the firm.

Not sure if they are still as big of a player as they used to be. It may also be that there are too many lawyers with too much capacity so the risk model has shifted a bit. That makes a lot more sense to me to take on regular risks like that.
