i only use cell phones, but in case we ever sell our house...

i only have one phone jack upstairs. we are finishing the basement. do i have to put a jack in downstairs, or can the "satellite" phones reach the base station up stairs? and actually, do you have to plug in the satellite phones? (i know you need to plug them in to power, just not sure about the phone line.)
