people do that specifically for tri- racers.

I did that for the Jordanelle Tri one year...I knew I didn't need one to own, and if I didn't, didn't know what one I'd buy. But you can rent for a race, and they arrive in enough time for you to try them out, and then race and return.

Seemed it was a good way until you knew what you wanted to buy.
