My friend started as an employee of a big practice, and after about 3 yrs
bought out a practice from an old retiring dentist. I think he wanted to get a little experience and shore up financial footing a little before going out on his own, and he had a ready offer waiting for him as soon as he graduated.

Also, he went to school and initially worked in the midwest and bought a practice in the northwest, so I think the chance to relocate permanently to the northwest was a huge factor. I don't know now a few years later if the joys of running his own practice make him wish he had done things differently.
