Interesting. I had similar shingles pain without the rash 4 years ago. It came
on 2 months after my first root canal and lasted a month. This year, my confirmed shingles with rash, also came exactly 2 months after my second root canal this past March.
You mentioning your wife's root canal, is the first time I made a possible connection, seeing that shingles and root canals both involve damaged nerves. A possible link? Not necessarily the root canal, but the nerve damage done to the tooth preceding the need for one. Interesting.
