The 7s rumblings actually make sense.
Let me state up front. "I do *NOT* have any inside information." Zippo. Nadda. Ziltch.

However, I just came across this little piece of information: (emphasis added)
North American Invitational 7s

...

The NAI7s will return Oct 9th and 10th and be held at the newly opened regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City , a 16 field athletic complex with a 2500 seat championship field. With the hardwire streaming capabilities of the complex, we expect many, if not all, games will be streamed live from the event

The NAI7s will host multiple divisions as well as the Boys and Girls u18s and Mens and Womens Elite divisions as part of the Serevi Cup. We will also be introducing a u26 division, allowing for collegiate and non collegiate players and teams to compete against each other as part of a pilot program to grow a u26 Academy series.

...

Facts:
• October 9th and 10th is a Friday and Saturday. A BYU 7s team can play in it.
• It will be in Salt Lake. That's only an hour away from BYU.
• Check out the seal on the top of the web page linked above. Rugby Utah is involved.
• It is in BYU's best interests to support Rugby Utah and help them succeed.
• Cal Poly hosts a one-day Saturday 7s tournament known as the West Coast Collegiate 7s. A BYU 7s side could compete in it against the likes of St. Mary's, Cal, and Cal Poly -- respectable sides all.
• If we hosted our own 7s tournament as the rumblings suggest, that would be three 7s tournaments a BYU 7s side could participate in this fall.
• By way of comparison, Cal attended only three 7s tournaments last fall: The West Coast 7s, the Battle in the Bay, and the PAC 7 Championships. Those three events totaled 16 games in all. That's a respectable number of games. That would make fielding a 7s side well worth the time and effort.

I may not have any inside information on whether or not BYU will be fielding 7s this fall, but I can look at the above facts and conclude that it would make a great deal of logical sense for us to do it this year. Let's hope Coach Smyth and BYU administration agrees with my logic.
