I have seen airliners pass directly underneath my plane many times at cruising altitude. They looked closer than 1000 feet, but I'm sure they were probably double that.

Hard to tell. It looked to be about 1/4 mile away.

Depends on altitude and horizontal spacing but that is a general rule of thumb
