Let's compare his international goalscoring record with other US greats:
Player (Goals/Caps): Altidore (27/80), Dempsey (40/112), Donovan (57/157), McBride (30/95), Wynalda (34/106).

That comes out to ratios of 0.338, 0.357, 0.363, 0.316, and 0.321, respectively. So Altidore has a comparable goal scoring record to the greatest goal scorers in US history. The guy is 25 and he has already reached elite status as a US forward. Is he good at holding up the ball? No. Is he the best striker in the pool? Absolutely.

Keep in mind that people have been tapping young forwards to replace Jozy for years: Agudelo, Bunbury, Boyd, etc.

I'm excited at the success of Wood and Morris and I hope they do become better that Altidore, but it's silly to take this opportunity to diminish a 25-year-old who is already #5 on the top scorer list for his country.
