I briefly mentioned in a post the other day a bit of the dilemma the Jazz have entering free agency. I was focused mainly on Danny Green. After thinking about it and reading some stuff, it seems the dilemma is bigger than I thought. You see, this off-season is the last one in which cap space is a real commodity. Every team in the NBA is going to have enormous amount of cap space starting next off-season thanks to the new TV deal kicking in which projects to push the cap close to $100 million. With the playing field being completely equal across the league, the Jazz' ability to sign free agents will be virtually non-existent. Therefore, if the Jazz don't spend their cap space now, they will be in trouble for the foreseeable future. They may not even be able to hit the salary floor next summer.
The problem is that the Jazz have young, developing talent at every position. In some cases, they have more than one young, developing player at a position. The last thing you want to do is sign a veteran free agent who has already peaked to a multi year deal because he will take minutes away from the developing players which will stunt their development (Corbin, anyone?) and make it difficult to fully evaluate the value of those young players when it comes time to re-sign them.
So what should the Jazz do? Seems they have to be really careful regarding the free agents they target. They need to try to get guys who are still young and developing and offer them contracts that are well beyond what they are worth at this time. Maybe they sign players who under-performed for their first team and try to get them back on track.
