You also have the example of states who really don't enforce drug laws anymore
Hawaii comes to mind. As opposed to CO that made marijuana legal Hawaii just stopped enforcing it. That's kind of like providing a second chance. I don't know how good it is or isn't but it's a different approach.

The problem I see with it isn't necessarily drug related. I see people who are very quick to want to hand out harsh punishments to keep the spot they live in "crime free". Yet many of these same people don't like the idea of living next to prisons, and don't want to associate with people who have a criminal past. A felony is a life changing charge, we shouldn't be so quick to give them out.
