One of my professors finally admitted to the text book revision scam.
He said that putting together a first edition requires a ton of time and money. The initial research, putting together the content, and having extensive reviews costs a fair amount of money. He indicated that a publisher and writer were lucky to break even on the first editions. But once they put out revisions (at the same price), the effort to make those subtle changes, of course goes down dramatically. That's where they make their big money.
