I know he chose BYU for that very reason, to leave that life-style behind, to
start off fresh. I won't say his life-style isn't compatible w/ BYU's, I don't think that's fair to him, but even if there was a recruit who didn't have a lot of support coming in to the Provo/BYU life-style, I think it's worth it to give them a shot at it.

I find it hard to believe that a young man would be spat out from BYU worse than how he came in. And what's the worse that could happen, reasonably? That he loses a year of eligibility? Definitely worth it to trade a year, for a chance of a life-changing experience @ BYU...
