BYU has an image problem with black kids from Texas. Coach Halladay talked about that bias in a recent interview where he said he recruits Texas by looking at where some normal Mormon kids live. The recruits can think: I have a friend who is Mormon, this might just work out.
After rape-gate, BYU was hit pretty hard by the black community in Texas. Regardless of fault, the perception is that when a young black kid fails at BYU, BYU is quick to drop them.
Charles West has had some strange, dangerous, and public issues come up. I hope these are amicably resolved for his sake. But I would really like for Charles West cleared of all charges related to the prostitute. And then Charles West say something like, "BYU and its coaches really stood by me during this difficult time of my life. I am more convinced now than ever before that I am going to the school that God wants me to be."
I think this would go a LONG way toward continued success and future recruiting.
