Studies have shown that both applications and donations to the university increase with athletic success. It can be argued that a lot of alumni connection to universities and in turn their donations are because of sports.

I am not saying that huge subsidies are okay but there are large financial benefits to universities that don't show up on the athletic department profit and loss statements.
