There are likely hundreds of affiliate conference memberships
in Division 1 sports.

Along with UVU, Air Force, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, and South Dakota State joined the Big 12 for wrestling. That's because the Big 12 only had 4 full member schools that participated in wrestling.

The Pac-12 faced the same dilemma. They only have 3 full members that participate in wrestling. You have to have at least 6 members to sponsor a conference in most sports, including wrestling. So a number of years ago, the PAC-12 added Cal Poly, Cal St. Bakersfield, and Boise State.

As I've mentioned before, Big East member Creighton is an affiliate member of the WCC for Women's Crew.

The ACC doesn't sponsor Women's Gymnastics, because only a few of their schools compete in that sport. The few ACC schools that participate in women's gymnastics do so as members of the EAGL. The MWC doesn't sponsor women's gymnastics either. The 3 MWC schools that do have women's gymnastics participate as members of the MPSF, or as Independents.

Being an affiliate member of a conference pretty much means nothing. It's just a home for a small sport. I think most understand this. But it seems like there are a few that think this was a big win of some kind for UVU.
