As far as a handgun goes, I would go with a Glock 17 or 19 for a beginner. Simple, economical, reliable, accurate, and good mag capacity. The VP9 is also a great choice. My favorite gun is the Sig P226, but it is a bit pricey and probably better for someone with experience.
