You're mostly correct. They have to be from the same year that your car was
manufactured, not just the period and your vehicle has to be pre-1973. You also have to physically take the plate to the DMV so they can verify that it is an authentic plate, not a replica and that those plates are not currently assigned to another vehicle.

One other thing, if the plates are faded, don't repaint them until you have them authenticated. DMV has extremely specific rules about the colors, reflectivity, etc.
