Young worked his way to #2 as a SO and backed up McMahon. He did start for an injured Jimbo in one or two games- one where a 10th ranked BYU was upset by a Randall Cunningham led UNLV team. He then took over as a JR. Detmer did play a game or two as a RS FR when Covey was hurt, but once Covey got healthy Covey returned to be the starter. However, Detmer was brought on in relief of an ineffective Covey a few times that year to include a comeback Bowl win over Colorado that Detmer orchestrated. That led to a minor qb controversy and Detmer winning the starting role the following spring ball.
