something to the media--not saying anything is not an option. So they say something--anything. But you should never get too excited or angry or depressed about what the head coach says to the media. All you know for sure after hearing a coach address the media is that they are still the coach, they are still alive, and they haven't lost their voice. You seriously don't know anything more than that, no matter what they said or didn't say.
This is a game that has been going on as long as there have been coaches and media members. Some coaches are good at this game, and some are not, but it is still all a game. (And since we don't have anything else to do in the offseason, we parse and analyze every nuance of everything the coaches say, but we must never forget that their primary objective in addressing the media is to get through it without actually saying anything--any other motive has to do with motivating their players, not informing the fan base of anything useful.)
