I actually have some experience playing women's basketball
I played for the scout team for my college's women's basketball team. We were made up of a bunch of pick-up players who could at least create sets and different looks that would help the women's team prepare during their season. Couple of my observations:

- Women's basketballs (which are smaller and lighter) are awesome. Everything goes in. I mean everything. I felt like Jimmer out there (that one's for you CB)

- We destroyed them every time we played. Destroyed. We had scenarios where we were ahead, behind, 2 minute offense...you name it. We never lost to them and it wasn't close. We also toned down our own athleticism because it just wouldn't be fair.

- The biggest differences were vertical leap and overall quickness. We didn't select any real tall guys for our team so we didn't have a height disadvantage. These girls could certainly beat me in HORSE but the second you involve athleticism, it's over.

Now for some other thoughts:

Listed below are the vertical leaps for men and women in the 5% and 95% for their respective genders:
Men: 16.5 inches/28 inches
Women: 10 inches/19 inches

As you can see, men have almost 10 inches of vertical on women as jumping becomes more elite.

Having a specialist is an interesting idea, but what would they specialize in? Shooting only? The ball is bigger and the 3-pointer is deeper so their shooting would go way down. They can't jump so a jump shot over the hands of the defender is out of the question. And they couldn't defend on the other end against good athletes who could jump and have excellent lateral quickness.

I am afraid it's not even close. And that includes college.
