Soft woods pick up too many scratches. Hickory is hard too though - don't know anything about how difficult it is to stain.

Having an inside dog is definitely a problem for any wood floor.

who's staining it? not you i'm sure. get pre-finished real wood, not veneer.

We used Brazilian Walnut. Very durable with kids and pets.

I have pre-finished 3/4 Asian Teak that I purchase online out of Canada.
